is a classic Umbrian hilltown rising above the Tiber Valley midway between the provincial Umbrian capitals of Perugia and Terni. It's population is listed as about 17,000 but this includes all the surrounding villages within the the Comune of Todi. The city itself may have about half of that number and in 2010 there were only 2274 residents within the walls of the historic city. Despite its small size, Todi has three monumental and historic churches (and many smaller ones), a magnificent opera house type theater, at least five specialized high schools, and a surprising number of excellent restaurants.
Todi is a lovely little city and we hope that all the summer cultural activity will help bring it back from the troubles that have been made worse by the economic crisis. We are aware of some of the issues and problems that recent city administrations have had to deal with, among them the needed sewage treatment plant, the use of the ex-hospital, the problems of parking and access to the city center, the project for the Roman market parking area, and the larger issue of the commercial and residential decline of the historic center.
The Teatro Comunale, one of the many lovely venues for cultural events. The Caffè of the Theater hosted an exhibition of my paintings in 2022 under the title of CIVITAS, from October 21st through 24th, when I awarded paintings to thirteen people in and around Todi who I considered to be among those who made Todi a better place to be.
This is one of the small pictures in the show.
There are many places to stay in and around Todi. A few are inside the walls, others are in the newer parts of Todi outside the walls, where parking is easier. There are also many agriturism places all through the surrounding countryside. The Fonte Cesia Hotel and the Ristorante Jacopone.
Inside the walls are:
Outside the walls are:
Bar Pianegiani*, which makes the best ice cream in Todi, and my favorite barbershop on the right.
The Piazza del Popolo is the site of frequent special events.
